Harper Government announces renewed support for Democracy

PRESS RELEASE -- 1 April 2011

The Harper Government today announced that if re-elected, it would support true democratic principles in Parliament. Since the days of Trudeau, individuals MPs have lost power, as power has been centralized in the PMO. In addition, political parties have grown across this country which represent a significant proportion of the population and they are not being adequately represented in Parliament. The Harper Government is committed to addressing this inequity through the following initiatives:

1) Put forward a bill that will change procedures in Parliament so that if the Government looses a vote on one of its own finance bills it would trigger a separate non-confidence vote rather than being considered a non-confidence vote itself. This would give sitting government MPs the freedom to vote against a government bill without fear of toppling their own government.

2) Initiate a commission which will bring forward a recommendation by the end of the year for how to implement proportional representation within Parliament. It is disgraceful how the BQ  and the Greens both poll nationally about the same, yet the BQ has over 50 seats and the Greens have none.

3) The Prime Minister will no longer attempt to muzzle his MPs and script his ministers public. The primary purpose of MPs is to represent their constituents, not the political party they are associated with.

4) Maintain both tax deductions for political party contributions and the $1.95 per vote for each party. In a democratic society it is important that political decisions reflect the will of all people, not just the citizens who have money and can afford to give to political parties. tax deductions and $/vote both serve this purpose, additionally giving money per vote will encourage citizens with little or no money to give, to participate more in our political system.

5) Admit that coalition governments are perfectly legitimate options in our system if the party that won the most votes is unable to secure the confidence of the House. We will therefore also stop broadcasting our silly 'coalition' attack ads effective immediately.
